gallery of town events close burford festival 2015 - it's over our extremely knowledgeable local speakers filled their weekday venues (the methodist and baptist churches, and the friends meeting house) often to bursting point. robin mills addressed a sell-out audience with a dramatic and enlightening multi-media presentation on the details behind the battle of waterloo, 200 years ago. nicholas dewey delivered an entertaining and informative talk on the history of vaccination. maggie parkinson entranced us with the story of the silk road – its history, art, politics, beauty – and the wonderful costumes she acquired during her recent travels along it. our author programme was just as popular as the speakers and added burford library to the list of packed venues, drawing an audience in to admire the art on dsiplay. in his inimitable style raymond moody brought to life burford’s past churchmen, particularly incumbents of st john the baptist. peter tickler spoke of writing crime novels. allan ledger treated us all to delectable pink port as precursor to describing the theatrical goings-on of blenheim. jack straw ranged widely over his personal and political life with entertaining anecdote. lord hurd spoke charmingly about his fascination with the life and loves of disraeli and answered political questions head on. clare mackintosh , interviewed by anne youngson, was entertaining and insightful on what it takes to change career to become a writer. our theatrical offerings were well received. ‘ripping yarns!’ was an enchanting literature tour for those who braved the scary little girls , who were chameleon-like in their ability to portray different characters. ‘twelfth night’ was the promised romp by a highly energetic cast from the lord chamberlain’s men performing in cross-gartered splendour – quite delightful! these experiments were supported by a favourite from past festivals – ‘standing ovation!’- the quartet of performers led by russell hawkins – and they achieved one as well! we continued the tradition of community events, but with changes while the warwick hall is under construction. the generosity of sponsors meant that the festival lunch was a three-course feast and our enthusiastic diners were entertained by magician geoff bond and guitarist colin greenway , in the bowls club. the children’s party was held in the primary school with a sunny picnic and a sparkling alice in wonderland set of activities. there was no heritage fair this year but the party on the rec was expanded to include craft stalls, and many free events, entertaining children of all ages from early afternoon until late into the evening with an exciting line up of young singers and musicians. after a wet start for those erecting the marquee and stage, the weather allowed around 500 burfordians to show off their dogs, picnic, play, eat, drink and dance. it was a joyful scene indeed. the pubs of burford became even more alive over the festival this year with eight scheduled events to rock the town. starting with live music at the highway’s beer festival, it continued with an amazing line-up: celine dos santos , dave ord-hume and friends , spats langham and the hot fingers trio , nikki loy , the rockin ratbags , matt belmont and the strung together ensemble. all events buzzed and the audiences donated generously to the festival. the arts of whisky and beer brewing were explained in entertaining style – with tastings of course! the classical music programme started with michael bochmann and his three colleagues who enchanted us in the baroque chamber concert, especially with the thrilling devil’s trill sonata by tartini. it was wonderful to experience the young talent emerging in the corinium players guitar ensemble who amazed their audience with their skill and the variety of music they offered, and the cotswold youth choir who sang bob chilcott’s ‘little jazz mass’ by memory with great sensitivity and charm. they supported the burford singers and cotswold chamber orchestra in the finale concert which closed the festival with a glorious rendition of sir karl jenkins’ vibrant and dramatic ‘gloria’, an unforgettable performance of the negro spiritual songs set by john rutter for melanie marshall who sang them with passion and humour supporting the audience singing “oh, when the saints……”. hugo ashton, chair
